BackSummary of the 5th Young Scholars Academic Conference of the Chinese Society for Computational Mathematics
July 30th to August 3rd, 2001, Xiamen University
The "5th Young Scholars Academic Conference" of the Chinese Society for Computational Mathematics was held from July 30th to August 3rd, 2001, at Xiamen University. This conference marked a gathering of young computational mathematics professionals in China at the beginning of the new century. Over 70 representatives attended, including those from universities across various provinces and cities, the Institute of Computational Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, among others. Notably, the conference also included three representatives from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the United States. The delegates included well-known experts of all ages from both domestic and international circles, as well as a group of energetic doctoral and master’s students.
The conference received over 50 academic papers, covering various research directions within the computational mathematics discipline and reflecting some of the recent research achievements of young scholars in this field.
Several outstanding young scholars were arranged to give keynote speeches at the conference. Professor Zhongci Shi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the Computational Mathematics Society of the Chinese Mathematical Society, delivered a speech at the plenary meeting on the morning of August 3rd and presented the 4th "Feng Kang Prize for Scientific Computing." The delegates unanimously agreed that the conference was very successful and would significantly promote the academic research and talent cultivation of young computational mathematics professionals in China.
The conference was co-sponsored by the National Computational Mathematics Society, its Youth Work Committee, and Xiamen University, with the specific organization undertaken by the Department of Mathematics at Xiamen University. The conference received strong support and funding from the "Research on Scientific and Engineering Computing" 973 Project, the Chinese Mathematical Society, and Xiamen University. The Department of Mathematics at Xiamen University made extensive preparations and organizational efforts for the successful convening of the conference. The conference expressed gratitude to the aforementioned units.
As decided in the subsequent Computational Mathematics Council Working Meeting on August 3rd, the next Young Scholars Academic Conference of Computational Mathematics will be held in October 2002 at Chongqing University.
