Back8th National Congress of Computational Mathematics
Meeting Minutes
(October 25-29, 2007) The 8th National Congress of Computational Mathematics was held from October 25 to 29, 2007, in Chengdu. The congress was hosted by the Chinese Society for Computational Mathematics and organized by Sichuan University. Over 400 delegates attended the congress, which featured ten keynote presentations by experts from universities and research institutes both in China and abroad. Present at the opening ceremony were Academician Heping Xie, President of Sichuan University, Academician Qun Lin from the Institute of Computational Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Junzhi Cui from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, four Vice-Chairpersons of the Society - Researcher Zhiming Chen, Professor Yunqing Huang, Researcher Guangwei Yuan, Professor Jialin Zhu, and Professor Liangang Peng, Dean of the School of Mathematics, Sichuan University. Professor Jialin Zhu delivered the opening address on behalf of Academician Zhongci Shi, President of the Society, while President Heping Xie and Dean Liangang Peng delivered welcoming speeches. The opening ceremony was chaired by Xuejun Xu, Secretary-General of the Society. Following the ceremony, the "Feng Kang Prize for Scientific Computing" was awarded, with the recipients being Professor Xiaoping Wang from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Researcher Linbo Zhang from the Institute of Computational Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Hongkai Zhao from UCI, USA. The congress received over 250 abstract submissions and held around 220 group presentations covering various fields of computational mathematics such as numerical solutions of differential equations, numerical algebra, numerical approximation, and optimization. During the congress, Academician Qun Lin and Academician Junzhi Cui delivered public lectures at Sichuan University, and discussions were held about hosting the 2009 National Congress of Computational Mathematics for Colleges. Guizhou Normal University, Nanjing University, and Zhengzhou University all proposed to host. The Youth Committee of the Chinese Society for Computational Mathematics also held the "Outstanding Young Scholar Paper Award in Computational Mathematics," awarding six young scholars, with three each receiving the first and second prizes. The congress was a resounding success.

The 5th National Symposium on Modern Scientific Computing, the 2nd Western Regional Congress of Computational Mathematics, and the 1st Symposium for Young Scholars in Computational Mathematics from China and Abroad (the Three Meetings) were jointly organized and hosted by Xi'an Jiaotong University, Ningxia University, Chongqing University, and Kunming University of Science and Technology, and held at Ningxia University in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, from August 9 to 13, 2006. A total of 158 delegates from across the country and overseas Chinese scholars attended the conference, chaired by Vice President Xing Li (Professor of Mathematics) of Ningxia University. Professor Yinnian He, Chairman of the Shanxi Society for Computational Mathematics, delivered the opening speech, and Professor Yuning Chen, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Ningxia University, welcomed the participants. Also present were Professor Aixiang Huang, Honorary Chairman of the Shanxi Society for Computational Mathematics, Professor Zhenfu Tian, Dean of the School of Mathematics at Ningxia University, Professor Dadi Yang, Vice Dean of the School of Mathematics at Chongqing University, and Professor Fengzao Yang, Vice Secretary of the School of Science at Kunming University of Science and Technology.
The Three Meetings received over 90 academic papers, with 19 invited representatives delivering 40-minute keynote presentations. The remaining presentations were divided into three groups, A, B, and C, with each delegate delivering a 20-minute report. These reports covered the latest research trends and hot topics in computational mathematics theory, numerical computations, and applications. The meetings were characterized by: (1) an increase in young computational mathematicians, accounting for approximately 85% of the delegates; (2) discussions on future developments in computational mathematics, proposing ideas such as software development and research on new effective methods; (3) presentations not only on advances in numerical analysis but also on interesting problems related to social life; (4) concerns about National Science Foundation grant applications.
The meetings fostered the gathering of old and new friends, exchanging research insights and emotions. Thanks to the efforts of the delegates, the conference was highly successful.
At the closing ceremony, Director Zhongqin Xu of the Mathematical Sciences Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China delivered an important speech, giving high praise to the conference and offering valuable suggestions for the future direction of computational mathematics in western China. Professor Zhenfu Tian, Dean of the School of Mathematics at Ningxia University, introduced the faculty and mathematical research directions of the school. The conference expressed gratitude to the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ningxia University, the Chinese Mathematical Society, and the Ningxia Mathematical Society for their generous financial support, to the leadership of Ningxia University for their care and support in human and material resources, to Professor Zhenfu Tian, Dean of the School of Mathematics at Ningxia University, Professor Aixiang Huang of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and the conference staff of Ningxia University for their extensive organizational work, and to all the participants, including Academician Junzhi Cui, Director Zhongqin Xu, and all the attending representatives.
