The vice chairperson of CSCM, Professor Gang BAO, has been elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
BackProfessor Gang BAO, male, Manchu ethnicity, was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province in June 1964. He began his professional career in January 1991 and holds a postgraduate degree and a Ph.D. He currently holds the position of Qiu Shi Chair Professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Zhejiang University. He is also a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), and the inaugural Fellow of the Chinese Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Additionally, he is recognized as a top-level expert in Zhejiang Province and was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2023.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Jilin University in 1985 and obtained a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Rice University in the United States in 1991. He held positions as an assistant professor and associate professor at the University of Florida starting from 1994, and later became a professor at Michigan State University from 1999. In 2006, he established the Michigan Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and served as its director. From 2010 to 2020, he held the positions of head of the Department of Mathematics and dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Zhejiang University. From 2020 to 2022, he served as the dean of the Graduate School and the College of Engineering at Zhejiang University. Presently, he holds the positions of head of the College of Science, dean of the College of Engineering, and vice president of Zhejiang University of Technology.
He has dedicated himself to research in fundamental theory, algorithms, and applications related to mathematical physics inverse problems and is recognized as one of the international leaders in this field. His significant academic contributions include developing a general theory of stability for inverse problems of wave equations, proposing a multi-frequency stable algorithm for solving Maxwell's equation inverse scattering problems, and systematically establishing the mathematical theory of diffractive gratings problems. He has published over 160 papers in top international journals including the Journal of the American Mathematical Society.
Professor Bao GANG has also served as an editorial board member for more than 20 internationally renowned journals including Inverse Problems, SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, Journal of Differential Equations, Multiscale Modeling & Simulation, Sci. China Math., among others. He has received national recognition for his work, including a second-class National Natural Science Award and a first-class Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Award. Additionally, he has been honored with the Feng Kang Scientific Computing Award and the Outstanding Achievement Award from Michigan State University. In 2022, he was invited to present a 45-minute lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians. He has led several significant research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including innovative research group projects, key projects, and integrated projects, as well as a National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (Category B).
