Obituary
BackMr. Zhongci SHI, a famous mathematician, one of the leaders and builders of China's computational mathematics industry, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a researcher at the Institute of Mathematics and Systems Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, died at 13:40 on February 13, 2023 due to ineffective treatment due to illness. Beijing passed away at the age of 89.
Mr. Zhongci SHI was born in Yin County, Zhejiang Province in December 1933. He was admitted to the Department of Mathematics of Zhejiang University in 1951, transferred to the Department of Mathematics of Fudan University in 1952, and worked at the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences after graduation in 1955. In 1956, he went to the Soviet Union to study computational mathematics. After returning to China in 1960, he worked at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has served as the director of the Department of Mathematics and the Director of the Computing Center of the University of Science and Technology of China, the director of the Computing Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the first director of the State Key Laboratory of Scientific and Engineering Computing, the vice chairman of the Chinese Mathematical Society, the chairman of the Computational Mathematics Branch of the Chinese Mathematical Society, and the chief executive of the National Climbing Plan. Scientists etc. In 1991, he was elected as an academician of the Department of Mathematics and Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Mr. Zhongci SHI conducted systematic and in-depth research on the finite element method and achieved original research results. Representative works include: the spline finite element was proposed in the late 1970s, which triggered a large number of subsequent works; the convergence of the non-coordinated finite element method was studied since the 1980s, and the peculiar "wrong-way convergence" phenomenon of the non-coordinated finite element was discovered and proposed. A new criterion for discriminating the convergence of non-coordinated finite elements is proposed, which proves the convergence of a series of finite elements with important application value in the engineering community. This is the most profound and systematic result in the field of international uncoordinated finite element research so far. He has won the third prize of the National Natural Science Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award, the Hua Luogeng Mathematics Award, the first Su Buqing Applied Mathematics Award, etc.
Mr. Zhongci SHI enjoys a high reputation in the international mathematics community. He dedicated his life to the science and education of his motherland. The death of Mr. Zhongci SHI is a huge loss for Chinese computational mathematics. We mourn deeply and deeply remember Mr. Shi Zhongci. Mr. Zhongci SHI will always live in our hearts!
